Oil line

On my 40 I have an oil line that runs from the bottom of the oil filter to one of the bolts that holds the time cover in place, I have not seen this on any other flatheads. What is this for and can it be run right back into the pan? Thanks for all the help. Bob

That's the return line (non-pressure) from the oil filter. It can be run into the pan. The way it is set up now on your '40 was the proper way from about April, 1940 through the end run of the model year. Prior to that the return line was run to a special bolt that replaced the left fuel pump to pump stand bolt. Sometime in (I believe 1946) the routing was changed to a boss on the oil pan. The later pans had a threaded hole in the boss for that purpose. A '40 oil pan does not.

That's the way my 1941 is also, sold in Dec 1940 in Denver. I just haven't reinstalled the filter yet. I haven't seen the flexible lines available anywhere. You can buy the later dipstick tube boss with the flared fitting hard line return opening and rivet it to the older oilpan. But I figure I can live without the filter as often as my oil is going to get changed.
