Oil level in re-built engine?

Just checked the shims in an older rebuilt engine and removed necessary shims on the mains. The rods were fine. I had finished the installation of this engine when it was found to leave a dinner plate sized puddle under it at only four miles of use. That is when I pulled and adjusted the mains. After I reinstalled the engine I removed the distributor and put a quart in and then put 4 more quarts in the normal way.
The oil didn't reach the bottom of the dipstick. I added a 1/2 quart more and still no oil on the stick. What the Hey? Suggestions please. Thanks guys.

Are you sure your pushing the dipstick in all the way. At the split, both pieces must go into the block. If that's not whats wrong, you have the wrong dipstick.

After the pan has been removed it takes an extra amount of oil to fill the dipper tray. On a normal oil change the tray is not emptied.

It takes 5 quarts total. Once the dipper tray is filled, an oil change will be about 4 1/2 quarts. Just top it off up to the F mark.

OK I checked my dipstick and found it to be a repro part with a cap soldered on it about an inch below the loop preventing it to extend down to the loop. How long had this part been on this engine and nobody noticed it before,me included. Took the stick out of another engine and the oil level was about 3/4" above the full mark. Thanks guys.
