I have a 1953 f250 ford pu, 239 v8 Can anyone explain to me why there is OIL inside the air filter canister bout 3/4" high looks like a pond. The outside of canister says OIL Level with line. After I took the top off where there is a wing nut .
Thanks, Louie
Yes, oil bath air cleaners worked, and continue to work well on some of my engines. Fill level line for the oil is usually clearly indicated on the side of the metal container. Without oil they lose a lot of their efficiency. Too much and it will get sucked into the engine.
Agreed, Get your owners manual from Mac's or other retailer.
It explains much.
While your at it spend some of your hard earned dollars and get some service manuals that covers your year.
You don't know what you are missing over and above wasting many a Saturday afternoon perplexed at why this or that and not cruising.
The oil bath filters were( far as I remember) more efficient than the later paper, the air had to get past the oil and allowed the oil to settle the dirt out. I would say the cost to manufacture and probably a few environmentalist's caused it to be discontinued. I have cut my fingers a time or two while cleaning the crud out of them and crank vent tubes.
Paper filter elements are fast and easy to change for those that don't want to deal with the mess of cleaning up and changing the oil in the old style filter. Not a problem for me but for some maybe.
