Oil in transmission

What oil should be used in a 1928 transmission. i pulled the plug and it is only half full. Should i add some or drain and refill. What is that oil??????

600 weight available from the Model A part houses.

You remove the fill plug on the side of the transmission and add oil up to about 1 inch of the top of the fill hole.

600w gear oil. You can get it from the large A parts suppliers. Anything thinner doesn't let you shift properly.

I buy a 5 gallon pail of Mobil 636 from the local bulk oil dealer. I haven't purchased any in the last 10 years, so I don't know thw current price.

Once you obtain the oil, I'd recommend draining the transmitter and filling with the new correct oil. Fill so it almost starts to run out of the fill/level hole. The Model A vendors such as Brattons, Snyders, Macs, etc all sell 600W for that purpose. 600W is not 600 weight, its about 250 weight so anywhere you can find an oil of about this weight you'll be fine.

Patrick has always given me good advice, but I will differ with him here. When I filled mine as he suggests, it came out around the shift lever; I drained it down to just below the fill hole, and the leak stopped. Just one man's experience.

I fill mine the same as Pat, to the point of just about running out of the fill hole.
My shift tower vent is moist with oil, but no real loss, or drips coming out.

Ditto with Patrick and Tom with no problems. Maybe Ray's vent hole is plugged and the pressure is pushing oil out around his lever.
