With the power steering assembly on the car, the Ford FL1A is too long.

That seems odd to me. The original bolt-on canister style filter assembly is much larger than the spin-on filters.
Was the power steering setup an add-on, or original?

The set up on the car looks original to me. It has the add on oil filter adaptor for spin on filters. The center nut sticks off about an inch, and the adaptor about 1/2" which means the filter has to pull away from the block that far to free it.

So when you acquired the car, that adapter was already installed?
MERC released it's own changeover kit for the 1956 model run. Of course I cannot find an example of it. The FORD kit was released in 1957.

) to follow up on this ...
There was once available on FYB medium to heavy truck FYB, an oil filter adapter that could be swiveled to clear frame components.
This adapter (if found) would alleviate (hopefully) the problem as encountered here or a installation with tubing headers where it is difficult to reach the filter.
It took a cartridge type filter but a SPIN-ON ADAPTER could be used to allow a SPIN-ON filter.
I have read (and not saved) descriptions of THE ABOVE happening when the engine mounts are turned to move the engine forwards or rearwards.
