oil filter kits

I'm starting a total rebuild on my 31 engine and I plan on adding an oil filter.
What can you guys tell me about the different kits the vendors sell?
Are they worth putting on?

you want a "full flow" system. The bypass systems do little to filter the oil. The easiest full flow system to install is the "A Ford able". Its a valve cover with the filter mount built in. YOu can make up your own full flow system by modifying the by pass system, or buying a filter mount and plumbing it all yourself, but theres a lot of research and work to do if you choose those paths.

The valve cover, oil filter mounted system is the best way to go, and as mentioned above, that particular system is as full flow filter as can be obtained for the standard Model A engine. You can obtain a filter canister 90 degree adapter, that allows the filter to be mounted vertical, to ensure canister remains full of oil when the engine is stopped. These adapters are available through NAPA or other speed equipment stores.
 
Ford Racing Part # M-6880-A50. Works great with the A-Ford-Able Oil Filter Kit. When you use a WIX 51515 Filter, (it's black with a removable label) makes for a really neat looking installation.

Since the oil has very little pressure, can you tell what kind of flow that you have as the filter does its job, without an Oil a Pressure Gauge?
 
You do not need one. The A is designed to handle dirt, which very little gets in with our good roads these days.

What you need is a oil with additives and detergents. These chemicals keep nasty by products from forming and keep microscopic dirt in suspension so it goes out with a change.

Also, do not change your oil every 500 miles. That would be a complete waste. A couple of thousand is likely to be more realistic depending on how you drive. Keep in mind that no engine has ever failed from old oil. Plus you are not likely to ever put enough miles on the car to make a difference.

Check with Bert's, they don't stock oil filter kits and will explain why. Very good advice too.

We reviewed the various oil filter kits several years ago and concur on using the A-ford-able kit. We also use the Ford racing bracket to redirect the position of the filter so it can be filled and removed without spilling oil.
 
On my 1948 Chris Craft with a K95 flathead there was NO oil filter. In 1949 they added a cart. type filter. Now not much dust and dirt on the water but all my new and vintage watercraft have them.

No filter on my truck but I am considering one. They are more expensive than I anticipated!

Just a thought.
