Oil dip stick hole on 292 block

I fear I once again didn't look forward enough and may have made more work for me. I am replacing a 239 Y-block (don't ask) out of a 1956 Thunderbird with a 292. I didn't think to look where the hole for the oil dip stick tube was located on the re-manufactured 292 before I buttoned up the oil pan.

I find the hole on the side of the block for the Thunderbird is plugged, and the hole next to the timing cover is open. Can the plug be easily removed on a complete engine? or do I have to drop the oil pan to remove it? How do I plug the open hole?

Where can I find a new plug if needed?

(photo) Here's the holes he's talking about.
A '55/'57 T-Bird has the oil dipstick at the side, not in front.

Most any good auto parts or machine shop should be able the get a replacement plug for you.
It should tap in with a flat tipped bolt or punch, and a film of pipe thread sealer on it.
Is the engine in the car or out? I don't like to think of any metal filings in the oil pan but you may be able to thread a mid-sized self-tapping screw into the wrong plug and pull it out, if the side of the block isn't in the way. Use a small-ish vacuum cleaner tip while inserting the screw to get most of the filings up and out.

The paranoid side of me would rather drop the pan and not have to worry about metal bits.
