oil cooler

anybody in fordbarn land running an oil cooler on a flathead. if so, what type etc. Does it help with cooling?

The flathead V8s didn't run oil over as many surfaces as the later overhead valve V8 engines did. The exhaust valve guides are cooled mostly by the coolant in the block so the heat there is transfered more to the coolant anyway. During World War II the engine was addapted to the Bren gun carriers and an oil cooler was engineered into the design to aid in cooling. The type of vehicle and the way the engine is mounted made the cooler a necessity. I think there is a diagram of that cooler system somewhere on this site in one of the old threads.

Oil coolers may not be as important on a conventional engine installation unless monitored oil temp exceeds 225 degrees F. The Oil's capacity to lubricate drops off quickly above that point.
