Oil Change Frequency

stouchton,

I said in my opening of this post that I was using Shell Rotella T which already has the ZDDP in it so it must be formulated as you say. I just added a little extra and again this was instructed by the builder to use Rotella and 4 oz. of the ZDDP.

Henry said change oil every 500 miles, sae 40 in the summer and 20 in the winter, hey oil is cheaper than bearings!

the oil in henrys day had absolutely nothing in it to protect the engine, nothing, no wonder he wanted it changed every 500 miles, your going by an 85 yr old maintance manual, would you let a doctor operate on you with 85 yr old technology?

Sorry there - was not clear on my intent. Really did not imply that comment for you just wanted to give the folks a heads up that spending money on ZDDP and putting it in a modern oil just might be a waste of money. Of course, if the oil is formulated for ZDDP, then everything should be just fine.

Adding ZDDP to modern oil will not hurt anything, except the wallet. and of course, there are probably modern oils you can add it to - just not sure how you tell which ones.

I too run the Shell Rotella T for that exact reason :)

Put a drop of oil fron the dipstick on a piece of soft paper. Let it spread out. Hold it up to the light. If you see contaminants it is time to change.

Full synthretic and synthetic blend oils are the only oil is use in my Model A's. The same goes for the transmission and differential oils. Synthetic grease is my choice for the running gear and suspension. I change the engine oil annually, and I do not have an oil filter on the engines.

If you want it warrantied, then do what the builder says to do, period!

Haha - very good.

It was probably REALLY hard for "Henry" to recommend something that didn't exist yet.

Where can I buy air from the 1920/30's to fill the tyres? The new stuff has more "additives".
