Caterpillar hasn't made engines for on-highway use for several years. I don't recall exactly when they stopped supplying them for medium duty trucks, but it was to due to current emissions regulations for on-road diesel engines. Not that they couldn't pull it off, but it would be an expensive venture nonetheless. It's possible they might be doing some shadow market research to see if there would be strong enough interest.
