odd speedometer reading(?)

I saw an oval speedometer(still in bezel) for sale the other day that read 00000. Bezel is rusty and would need work. My question is regarding the reading. Is it that 'easy' to reset? I don't think that would have altered the value of this one, so I doubt someone would have taken the time to do it. I suppose it's possible someone drove it 99,999, went one more mile, and parker it forever more(insert LOL or haha here), but not likely. Maybe I'm missing something obvious. Thanks.

Look at face and at numbers on odometer wheels...it is just possible that the thing is new or rebuilt but externally battered by bad storage and handling. If face and numbers are battered too, most likely someone monkied with the reading.

If the lead seal on the back of the unit is broken or missing, you can assume that it has been tampered with. If not, there is a chance that it is a NOS speedometer assembly. Gar Williams

I'll receive the speedometer early next week. Will yet you know how this one ends up. Thanks for the tips/comments.

Yes, the wire that is "sealed" with lead is looped through a small stud that sticks through the case just above the screw. Gar Williams
