Odd oil pressure gauge issue

The 59 AB in my '36 has always had good oil pressure. I run 20-50 oil and when the engine is cold the stock gauge was always pegged out until the temp got past 170 and then would read 35-40 psi at idle.

A week or two ago, the pressure showed 20 psi at any rpm when cold. No odd engine noise but it got my attention. I decided to do two things. I bought a really nice Autometer mechanical oil/temp gauge set. I found one that has a vintage look and the gauge faces are a similar color to the original. I also purchased a new sending unit for the stock 50 lb gauge. I put the sending unit back into the port at the rear of the engine behind the intake manifold. There was no room there to add a tee but I noticed a second 1/4 npt outlet oriented 90 degrees to the first one. I used it to mount the 1/8 inch tube for the Autometer gauge. When I started it up, I had 65 psi on the mechanical gauge and 20 psi on the original same as the original sending unit.

Must be the '36 pressure gauge, right? I lucked out and found a nice used gauge on eBay for a decent price. Got it installed and 20 psi just like before. I can switch sending units and gauges, still 20 psi. If I ground the wire to the sending unit, the gauge goes past 50 lbs.

As a final test, I used a 6 volt power supply to power the gauge, put an air hose coupling on the sending unit, ran a wire from the gauge to the sending unit and another to ground the sending unit (positive ground) Using the regulator on my air supply I put 25 psi to the sending unit. The gauge went right to midscale 25 psi. Both gauges and sending units did this. I could raise and lower the air psi and the gauges would go up or down.

I also moved the sending unit to the same port as the mechanical gauge, no change.

Not sure what the next step is. The oil pressure gauge and the fuel level gauge share the same power wire and the fuel gauge is working fine..............

Thanks Jake, I ran a jumper from the Pos battery post directly to the oil sending unit base fitting. No change. Just to make sure, I hooked external 6 volts to the gauge, as you can see 20lbs on original gauge 60+ on the mechanical.

Maybe something holding the relief valve partially open? Or a compromised relief spring?

You did all the correct tests so did I also on a 59AB. Since my rebuild with new sender the dash gauge struggles to get to 30 and the 'good' mechanical reads a soled 60# as you did grounding the gauge pegs thats good. tried some used senders same thing. I hate to do this steeling (borrowing) the sender from my F8 same deal 6vt pos grd. truck. NOW both read 60 lbs. NOTE I know my system is 80# and yours is 50# senders but your 50# sender is to match your gauge so in effect your engine is getting 60# and the original gauge would be maxed out at 50 lbs. This has nothing to do with the pressure relief valve > that blows off at 60lbs I believe since 1942 & up. I have no clue why my truck sender reads perfectly book says truck with 337 same part no as a 239 59ab 8ba eab & Lincoln Worked for me

As you know, the combination press/fuel guage are connected in the back. How is your fuel guage working? terry

It's a new day and I got right to work. I decided to duplicate the test using air to pressure the sending unit but this time I hooked it up to the gauge in the dash, not one on my work bench. It read a value very close to what I regulated the air pressure to. So this test used the factory power wire and sending unit wire as well as all the connections. Without changing anything else, I swapped this sending unit I just tested with the one on the engine...... it works! So now I have the original gauge and sending unit in the car. I have no idea why it stopped working in the first place and why two different gauges and sending units would show the same issue.

Here's a picture of the cold start, The needle was still moving and went off scale a moment later. It will come down when the oil heats up and thins a bit. I now know more about a '36 oil pressure system than I ever dreamed of.

I'll try the new sending unit again in a few days, if it's bad, maybe I can get my $ back, the 50# units are not cheap.

Thanks to all for your help
