Occasionally starved for fuel

Thanks for the great suggestion on how to determine if my gas cap is venting.
I might try it, although I would prefer another approach because I resist removing my gas line from the carb since it is sometimes a challenge to reinstall it without it leaking. Last time I had to use "Seal All" around the brass nut's threads to stop a leak when reattaching the fuel line to the carb.

Run your "A", until it quits, remove your gas cap. If it goes WOOSH at all, the gas cap IS the problem. If it does not, it still could be your problem. It should start right up, though, after a few cranks. I'm betting that is your problem.

If your gas is leaking around the threads of the nut then the ferrule is not sealing and you probably need to replace it. You should not need to use a sealer or Teflon tape on the threads.

Thanks again for all of the replies.
Every single reply has been informative and helpful to me, and I really appreciate your responses. Fordbarn.com is an incredible site!

For those who have helped and might be interested, I found my problem with the engine occasionally "dying" - as some people had suggested - I had a non-venting gas cap! It is a typical cheapo-repro Vintique type of gas cap, which vented fine for about 5 years, and it now does not vent. I've replaced it with the same and it is venting properly.
I have also tried the much nicer Eaton repro gas cap, but it seems to breath (vents) too well and spills gasoline all over the outside top of my tank, so I am stuck with using the Vintique version. Too bad because I prefer the looks of the Eaton gas cap.
I wonder if I can somehow clean-out my clogged Vintique gas cap - I tried soaking it in gasoline and blowing it out, but no success.
It is easy to see and understand how the Eaton venting system works, but I cannot figure out how the Vintique gas cap venting works.
BTW - I also confirmed that I do have a "pencil" filter mounted to the brass shut-off under the tank, and my tank is quite clean. Thanks again for all of your help on this issue!

Pat,

I had experienced the very same thing last year with my cap. My new Eaton style works well I only though run my car from 1/4 to 3/4 full so I've not experienced gas spilling out from my new cap.

Try soaking it in laquer thinner.
