NZ air cleaner option

IMHO all cars should have an air filter. I don't know anything about this particular one but on a right hand drive car I suppose your options may be limited. Some say a filter restricts the air too much making the engine run rich. I use a K&N filter which breaths well. My plugs are clean at all times.

Hi Blue,

Many very poor articles, and a few good articles were written in magazines and on Forums about Model A air filters.

The proportional amount of intake air flow required for a Model A four (4) cylinder engine is not any different from the cubic feet of air intake flow required to go through a residential or commercial air handling unit filter for warming a building with a heater or cooling same.

The successful mechanical engineering solution for air flow on "any" particular engine is dependent upon having an air filter with a large enough area in square inches such that the the cubic feet of air passing though the filter on the intake side is proportional to the cubic feet of air exiting the exhaust.

Fifty (50) years ago I was forced to run about a mile while wearing a U.S. Military protective mask, (formerly referred to as a gas mask), which had thin rubber flaps on the outside acting as check valves.

Breathing outwards directly into the atmosphere was very easy when the flaps were open.

Breathing inwards while running was extremely difficult because the outside air had to be filtered with minute air passages through charcoal filters.

Not suggesting everyone get a U.S. Military protective mask to "experience" running a mile while wearing one ............ but if one ever experienced this painful event just "once" ..... he will never forget that all of the Model A filters that failed in the past were the poorly designed ones that were too small with far too much restricted air intake flow.

Hope this helps.

I like the ones that mount ABOVE the rear of the engine via a rubber hose. They have a large filter & are commonly called the "HIGHBOY".
I read that a 200 Cubic Inch engine needs 100 Square Inches of filtering surface.
Bill Clean

Mr. Bill Clean, Esq., is offering a very wise improvement to the filter indicated in the pdf above used in conjunction with the steering column mounted on the right hand side.

Providing a 90 degree elbow in front of the carburetor, combined with a length of vertical tube, (i.e., with the filter element at a higher elevation), could prevent the air filter from getting thoroughly saturated with fuel mounted on a Model A carburetor that is "constantly" fed fuel "24/7" by gravity, through a possibly leaky Model A cut-off tank valve and/or a possibly leaky carburetor float valve.

While I still had updraught carbies, I ran a flexible hose, like vacuum cleaner hose from an attachment I made to go on the front of the carby up to a paper element air cleaner mounted on the radiator stays. It was up high and out of the way. Many thousands of miles later, I went to a downdraught carby and used the same cleaner on top of it.
