Notch in pistons

Just got these new Sealed Power pistons in for the engine repair and wonder what the notch is in the top of the piston. I haven't seen that before and wonder what the function is. What is it? (Notch is visible in 1st and 3rd piston on top row.)

This has always confused me, Why off set the wrist pin, when the crank is off set? I thought that was the reason the crank was ofset so the pistons didn't need to. Eggen pistons are not Off set, which reduces friction. During the 60's and 70's reversing the pistons was a standard hop up item, add ing 25 hp to a 392 Chrysler Hemi.
