Not Model A -- But Could Have Been

Am restoring a '29 Tudor now, it has a 4 blade fan and that's what I am staying with. BUT, last fall I had to put a new Radiator in my '37 Chevy. In the process, noticed a crack in the original fan blade with about 235,000 miles on it. (I bought the car in 1956 when I was 17 and have kept it all these years, now restored.) I thanked my lucky stars that I noticed the crack and purchased a new 4 blade fan from one of my regular Chevy suppliers. Yesterday a blade came off the brand new fan that had less than 400 miles on it, cut three gashes in the new radiator core, don't know if it is repairable or not. Looked the fan over, one blade missing and obviously had been cracked for a while. The opposite blade is also cracked where the two blades were spot welded together. It was then that I realized it was about half the thickness of the original fan.

OK, I read the earlier post about fan blades, so perhaps just venting a bit about the cheap and obviously inferior replacement parts one can end up with. Buying a new metal fan blade today apparently doesn't solve all your problems! Anyone know where I can buy a fan blade that works? Are the plastic blades unique to the Model A, or are there suppliers that sell blades for any application? Thanks for input.

If the fan is the sort that is basically a flat stamping with 4 holes to bolt to its hub, I would try to match it up with an OEM fan from a '50's-60's car. There were only two common bolt patterns, and I would suspect they go way back. And of course your basic engine family was used into the early '60's... I would want an original junkyard or NOS one, not one from a repro Corvette or Mustang type place, after your experience!

Try www.chevybarn.com and post the question there

Tell me it ain't so Ethel!.......There is a spot on the Chevybarn to advertise non-chevy cars and parts! There were several later year flathead Fords for sale and lots of Ford parts.

I just don't know about some people. With such liberal views I figure they have to be either Yankees or from California!

Ron Kansas,

Suggest you get yourself hooked-up on "the Stovebolt Page", which is dedicated to Chevy Trucks, 1929 through present.

Good bunch of folks, and the knowledge / talk spills-over into Chevy cars form the Stovebolt era.

Another good on-line resource is the forum at VCCA - Vintage Chevrolet Club of America.

Sorry to hear of the fan / radiator catastrophe !

Good luck

(I grew-up with the Advance Design Chevy pick-ups, so stovebolts are close to my heart...)

Ron Kansas,

Did you ever contact who you bought the fan from? If so, what did they say, if anything? Also, I hope you are a member of the VCCA (I am) and
let them know on their website about what happened. It might help some
other guy not have to experience the same problem as you. Good luck.
