can't get my 41 ford with 6 volt pos ground w/8BA engine to charge, has rebuilt generator, that has been checked out by local auto electricial shop to be in working order, tryed 2 different new regulaters ,with my volt meter the best i get is 6.5 volts, the dash amp meter reads a slight charge, put headlights on shows no charge or discharge, checked and triple checked all wireing and connections, ran jumper wire to all grounds still not charging? battery is 3 years old and starts car ,could the battery be at fault and not taking a charge, whats left to check?

Sounds like a regulator problem, if you want to try remove the two screws on the reg , best to disconnect grnd while pulling the cover ( it likes to short n burn ) hook up volt meter on batt term of gen , apply very light pressure on top center points (spring) end seeif volt go up. final hi read 7.2 to 7.4 in this heat will be a good start, ernie n tx

I never had good luck with 6 volt battery,3 years is good.I think its the battery. If it keeps going with no other chargeing from battery charger don,t worry about it.

Why don't you put a battery charger on and see if the battery voltage go's up. You are getting a slight charge or you would read a lower voltage then what you see, the coil will pull it down below 6.3 with no charge. A fully charged 6 volt battery should read 6.3 to 6.4 after sitting without use over night after charging. The generator should put 7.3 to 7.5 into the battery. I have 6 volt alternators with adjustable voltage regulators and set them at 7.6. This voltage works good for me even driving for 12 hours at 65 MPH the battery is not over charged. I have a digital volt meter below the dash so I know exactly what is going on at all times. I also use Optima batteries and they work great with no acid problems. If you have a battery switch with the green or black knob take it off they make poor contact. G.M.
