Nose Down Oil Loss

Please help with a oil issue.

early '30 (oval speedo) Coupe
Runs great. does not use oil. She marks her territory with a drip occasionally at rear of engine and under ******.

Checked oil in the morning - full, went on 20 mile tour with club. At a club picnic, parked her on a grassy knoll, nose down, for several hours. As I pulled away, car stalled about 50 yards from parking spot on upsloping road. Immediately lost enough oil to create a 20" puddle. Coasted to flat ground dripping oil badly.

Checked oil, level was below the "L". Added two quarts and started car.

Started car. Not drip, not a puddle, nothing while engine running.

Let car sit on flat ground, one drop after 35mins.

Drove home, 20 miles. Did not use any oil. Oil pan level at same level on dip stick as before the drive.

No increase in dripping in garage on fresh cardboard. She is back to her normal self.

Why did nose down loose all my oil, and how do I fix it?

PS: Blanche is my car, second from the right with the American flag. Same one in the 1945 picture of me avatar. As you can see, not a steep head/nose down.

How much of an angle was car parked at? 90 degrees, (Joke).

A little hot oil goes along way, but two quarts is a lot of oil.

There is much more to this story. Please keep us informed.

Enjoy.

I had this happen once. All ok until I parked it hot at an angle, and it pissed a huge puddle onto the ground - fortunately the street, not a driveway. I think what may have happened is that somehow the clutch housing accumulated a bunch of oil (which is supposed to dribble out the drain hole that has that big cotter pin in it) and it let loose, either through the hole or out the rear inspection plate. Can’t explain the two quarts, though.

I'd check for loose oil pan bolts all around the pan and also check that front rope seal where the crank and pan meet. Have a hole or crack in the front of the pan? Did you have the oil pan over filled with oil? LRF

I have seen this problem occur because of a worn-out rope seal in the front of the oil pan combined with a groove worn into the crankshaft pulley by the rope seal. Also, a failed oil pan gasket / loose oil pan bolts can cause this problem.

If I’m reading this right, he didn’t lose oil parked nose down. It was when he stalled nose up (up sloping). So it sounds like it was steep enough to run out of the rear bearing. If you raise the front enough, oil will run out the back.possibly your rear earring tube isn’t right.
