NOS HIPO Parts Counter Distributor?

I picked up a distributor today at a swap meet that I cannot figure out. It was in a Ford Motorcraft box with a label DA-691, C50Z-12127-E. It is a dual point with a steel plate screwed in place of where a vacuum advance would normally attach if applicable. In very light lettering above the mounting base you can read E2AE-12131-DA.
It is obviously brand new and I'm certain it is Ford manufactured as 12127 and Motorcraft are cast into the outside top of the distributor just below where the distributor cap sets. The distributor does not have the single stud that locates the distributor cap in the correct position. It does have two larger studs 180 degrees from each other located 3/8" below the top. A period correct distributor cap for a SBF of the mid 60's will not work. If this was a replacement distributor for the original dual point HIPO, what distributor cap would be used? What do I have?

From a HP catalog,,,C5OZ 12127-E is Dist. ***. for small block, (Mustang)
This catalog doesn't show a cap for this dist.
Listed at MSRP of $41.50 !! in '65, can you believe it ?

$41.50 is too much! My 1969 Ford Muscle Parts Catalog shows msrp at $31.80, and I bought one back then and it seemed like a fortune! By the way 427 med riser heads listed for $55.55 each back then too.

As far as the distributor cap, the C5OZ-12127-E dual point used the same cap as all Ford V8's from 57 up. The name Motorcraft was not on the original "E" distributor, it would be marked Autolite. The E2... indicates it was first cast in 1982. If it has a breaker plate then chances are the rebuilder had the shaft and the rest of the guts but no housing, so they used the later one during the reman. Remember the cap will have to align on one of the original bolts that held the vac unit, since the original dp had a casting for alignment. If you do get a cap to fit, make sure that the drive gear is cast and not steel if you intend to use it on a flat tappet cam.

Lastly, do yourself a favor and don't try to use it. The original distributors didn't work good to begin with, there is too much dwell variation because of the poor fit between the shaft and bushings. Not to mention the mechanical advance is too slow and has a poor curve to it. There are much better quality electronic distributors available
