NORS trans gears

Probably since the teens various manufacturers have supplied many different
component parts for our beloved Fords. I'm referring to nonscript after
market parts made 'Back in the day', specifically transmission gears.
Without going into excruciatingly painful detail use extreme caution when
mixing script and aftermarket gears....that $50 aftermarket swap meet gear
could be a snake waiting to bite you.
I am most assuredly NOT speaking of transmission gears manufactured
today....we all use them when script gears are not available.
The added pain comes when no matter how carefully a transmission is
tested on the bench ,even at high rpm's ,the trouble does not surface
many times until the road test.

Charlie, What kind of snake bites have you been getting and hopefully not fatal. Of course anytime you start mixing different parts around in a transmission bad stuff can happen but usually it is minor like excessive noise, stiff shifting, faster than normal wear. Sometimes parts just needs a little break-in. In disassembling old trans, I see a lot of replacement gears and they seem to have done fine. I don't how to use extreme caution because you just about have to build them and run them to find the problems. It would be nice to only use Ford script gears but they are getting hard to find and expensive. So tell us a little more about what you are finding with some NORS gears.

Barn,
Specifically noise....I build a lot of transmissions and in this particular instance
Republic gears mixed with script gears were #1 noisey and #2 after close examination
had excessive lash which may have accounted for the noise. My caution statement
regards ,I guess, looking harder for all the same make gears....preferably script....
when using swap meet or previously used gears.
As we know a bench test is only about 25% effective at best.

Charlie:
For what it is worth we have hooked a trany up in the lathe and run it up on several rpm ranges. Not perfect but at least you can hear noises before installing. Dave
