NORS Cluster Gear ID

I am finally getting around to sorting through the NOS and NORS transmission parts. I found a NORS cluster gear I was hoping would be a replacement for the badly worn cluster gear in Dads transmission and it turns out it seems to be abit later with a tooth count of 29-26-19-16. Warner part number WT279 8 E5. I looked on E-bay and it appears to be for a 58-61 3 spd behind an early FE engine. There is a notation in the listing not to confuse it with a simular part number transmission cluster gear for an Edsel. Does anyone have a Warner parts book that might have this gear listed, so I can determine which one this is? It appears the difference in the part number is in the 8 E5 suffixes. Thanks Rod

Pretty sure it is for a 3 spd. 1 gear for the main drive gear, one for 1st anf reverse, one for 2nd and 3rd and one for the reverse idller gear. Sams basic configuration Ford started using in 1928. Rod

Thanks, I appriciate you looking. } always hate to ID parts bsed on what is posted on e-bay as sometimes their sources are no better than a guesse. Rod

The Warner WT279-8 cluster gear is the only version of the 279 series cluster gears that I can find in the two old Warner catalogs I have. It matches the tooth count you showed. This gear is listed (by Warner) for the 1958-62 full size Ford (with 332-352-390 V8 applications) and for the 1958-62 full size Mercury (which came with the big V8) and the 1958-60 Edsel with the big V8's. The odd thing is that the Republic Gear catalog lists totally different cluster gears for the same Edsel applications. I suspect Warner didn't want to mfr the oddballs for the Edsels so that matched up the 279 gear with the appropriate mating gears to work. No proof on that, but Republic definitely had different tooth counts for the Edsel cluster gears....

No where did I find a WT279-8 ES listing. Every application of the 279 had the -8 suffix and that was it.

What year/model is the transmission in your Dad's car? Perhaps we have the correct gear for it.

Thanks Mac. We are putting a 39 style transmission in it. I need to recount the teeth as the gears we are using came out of a 46 or 47 passenger car and it had been awhile since I have had the gear set in my shop, but know you carry them. Was just trying to save him afew dollars as I have about $0.75 into this gear as it was part of the large purchase I made about 2 years ago. I still need to finish counting teeth of the used cluster gears from the same purchase. I think there are 6 or 7 in that box of stuff and another NORS cluster gear that I think likely fits a Mopar, but need to confirm that number also. Going to try to get through this stuff on my days off this week, but getting the AA truck wiith the 32 steering box home is a higher priority if we don't get rained out again. I will be in touch. Thanks Rod
