noisy speedo

When the cold weather hit, my speedo started jumping, and it was noisy. I pulled the center cable, cleaned it, lubed it, put it back. speedo no longer jumps, but it's still noisy.

So, I bought a new cable and installed it. Still noisy. Can it be the speedo itself? (early '30 oval with trip meter and reset) If it is the speedo, can a shade tree mechanic like me fix it? Thanks for your help.

Check the cable housing for any kinks and be sure the inside is clean. Disconnect both ends and run some solvent through it. You'd be surprised?

When I got my Cabriolet the speedometer didn't work. Poking around I found that it wasn't "plugged in", so I hooked it up. It made an awful noise and it didn't read correctly. Most of the people in the club said it has to be the cable. It wasn't.
Fortunately one of our club members rebuilds speedometers . Like you I would have preferred to do it myself, but it was worth it to get it refreshed by someone that had experience. It works great now and it looks brand new!

Their are some pretty fragile parts in the speedo. The housing is pot metal and can be broken real easly. I know from experience.

I recently had the same problem on a 31 Two door that had been sitting for years. I took the speedo out and seen two lead plugs removed them and sprayed with blaster and then oiled, has worked fine since.

There have been several threads on the speedometer. The noise has nothing to do with the cable. It is very easy to lubricate the speedometer once it is out and on the bench. Check the previous threads for directions. Gar Williams
