:confused:THE FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD ON MY 1951 FLATHEAD LINCOLN GETS NOISY AS THE ENGINE WARMS UP. IT IS A HOLLOW ROD THAT ALLOWS THE OIL TO LUBE THE PUMP LEVER. IT HAS BEEN CLEANED AND THE PUMP WAS SWAPPED, BUT STILL THE SAME PROBLEM. THE FUEL PUMP IS A DOUBLE ACTION TYPE. ANY IDEAS??

:confused:Now I find that with the fuel pump replaced by an electric one, the same tapping noise is the same! I replaced three lifters that seemed bad, but now I need to find any other noisy one. I'm not sure how. This tapping noise appears as the engine warms up. When cold, it's quiet and runs good. I really hate to tear down the head again! Any ideas?

The big 8EL flathead had hydraulic lifters. Likely that the tapping is coming from a lifter not holding up as the engine warms and the oil thins. Take a very long screwdriver or metal bar and touch the metal end to the head near the top (over the valves) and hold the other end to your ear. Move from cylinder to cylinder. You will find the cylinder with the noisy lifter. You may even be able to determine intake or exhaust valve, depending on which side of the cylinder produces the loudest tapping.
