Noise in the rear

I have a 37 coupe and everytime I hit a bump in the road it sounds as if something in banging in the trunk. There is nothing to bang in the trunk; the spare is tightened down and there is nothing else in the trunk. The trunk lid is closed. I even tried it without anything in the trunk (no tire, no nothing) and I still get the thumping and banging when I hit a bump in the road. I can't see anything wrong under the car, but I am no expert.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem? Any help would be appreciated.

I have been told that it may be the rear spring or a rear shock, but these are only speculations.

Thanking you in advance for any help or advice or solutions.... :)

Could it be the differential hitting the cover plate ?, covering the hole under the back seat ? , have you got axle bumpers ?, it may be hitting these, or maybe you need some ?... JMO... good luck ..

There should be a wear mark if something is hitting. Worn shackles, bushings, broken leaf in the spring pack, spring pack loose can all cause thumping/banging. Body mounts or worse, cracked frame may also do that. It'll take a careful inspection of the entire undercarriage and suspension to locate it. Lifting it from the frame instead of theaxle may disclose suspension problems. Good luck.

I don't have a 37 coupe so I don't know how big the trunk is but I'm thinking it's probably big enough to have someone ride in there and listen to better pinpoint the source of the noise.

Check your shock mount bolts. Loose bolts will cause that type of noise. I had it happen on a front shock and it sounds like a hammer hit when you go over a bump.

"Noise In The Rear" - Sounds like too many beans and brocolli.
The muffler and tail-pipe are good candidates for this. Have a large person jump up and down on your rear bumper, while you are underneath, to see if you get any clues.

I would look at the cap on the front wish bone ball . I have known of friend who replaced the rubber ball and problem solved. Compressed air will blow it on maybe using a little soap for lubrication. jsut a suggestion . kc

:) Took the 37 to friend's garage today and I think that we found the source of the noise in the back of the car. It appears to be the shock links (dog bones); especially worn on the right rear. I will replace the links. Hope this is the answer. Any thoughts??

BTW, drove 80+ miles today and the car ran great!!
