Noise in Bell Housing

Help!!

I have a noise that appears to be in the clutch area. It is there at idle in neutral and then it might be there when I let the clutch out in first or second. This is a new build with a new pilot bearing and a new throwout bearing. I took off the inspection cover and the fingers of the pressure plate are not hitting the throwout bearing when the clutch is not depressed. When you press in the clutch pedal and the clutch comes to a stop the noise goes away. This would seem to eliminate the pilot bearing and throwout bearing, but where should I look next??

Thanks to all, Jerry

With the clutch out and the ****** in nuetral, the input shaft bearing and the bearing in between the input and output are spinning. Could be either of those I suppose.

Tom,

It sounds like something is rubbing more than a loose spring rattling.

Mitch,

I did check the trans oil, but the bearings were sealed. Should I pry the inner covers off of them?

Worn throwout bearing rattle? Or it needs grease? I know I doesn't need to be done often but maybe it needs it.

The noise is present when the clutch pedal is released / up.. therefore the throw out bearing is not spinning if it is adjusted correctly.. he states it is correctly adjusted

You did put the clutch disc in correctly right? it can be installed correctly...

And you did out the throw out bearing on correctly correct?

I pulled an engine one time and there were six shiny starter bendix spring bolts in there. Could that be your noise?

That would be a good possibility, but since a new clutch, pilot bearing, and throw-out bearing were just installed, I'd guess any excess parts were removed.

Yes Tom, no excess parts in there.

Is it possible the oil baffle from the front bearing could be rubbing on the snap ring? I pulled the top off of the trans and they look very close to one another.

My plan is to take off the rear end again tomorrow and pull the trans off, but at this point I am not sure where to look.

Thanks to the replies.

Re: Noise in Bell Housing - Update

We had a good day yesterday working on this problem. Thankfully I had a couple of good Model A Friends over to help!!

We tried to find the problem by changing one thing at a time. This involved taking the trans in and out a couple of times after dropping the rear end. It was not the bearing lubrication shield or the seal on the front bearing or the snap ring sticking out too far in one spot.

After these tries we changed out the front new bearing and also changed out the cluster gear to what looked to be a better one that I had. With the trans on the bench we could hear a little noise by spinning the main drive gear and had pinpointed the noise to that area.

After this change the noise is gone:D I think it was the condition of the cluster gear rather than the bearing as the gear had some pitting.

Now to get it back together again.

Thanks again to all that replied.

I have a ****** that was stored by someone with the top off, so it got rusty inside. I thought it would be fun to clean it up and just see what it would sound like with the lightly pitted gears. It would probably be OK for a yard tractor.

probably wouldnt notice them one bit if you use the 600W oil - its so thick the pits would trap the oil and act like a cusion.:p

clean em up - get the rust off, grind the inevitable burrs off the gears from them being clashed over the years, install new bearings and im betting it would be quiet as new.
