No Engine Block Number, WHY?

On this original question, basic information is still missing!
Is the serial pad:
1. As cast, with texture like most of block surface and no stamping...or
2. Milled, ground, or filed smooth, texture gone.

Is it possibly a Model B Block.? Model B engines were never stamped from the factory.
If I have an un-stamped block I sometimes stamp a number on it (transfer) from an unusable block that I own, one that will never put back into service.

It is smooth, not the same texture of the rest of the block.

Then what you have is a block whose original engine number has been milled or ground off so you can put any number you want on it.
