No bell housing cover plate

After pulling the pan on my 29 Model A I realize someone before me did not put the cover plate at front of the transmission housing. What problems could this cause. Could it have anything to do with my rear engine oil leak? Thanks Joe Bohannon.

no, if the small plate is missing from the front of the flywheel housing. it will not cause an oil leak. it is just a filler panel pure say. there is a lot of Model A`s out there that are missing that panel.

It's a b***h to install once the oil pan is in place, therefore it frequently gets left off. Same thing with the engine pans.

Hey guys..New guy to the forum here....I've got a 29 model A ...over the summer I pulled the engine to have the crank machined for a new rear seal, and after dropping the motor in.....I noticed a problem......I forgot the gasket between the bell housing and the block...Before I go and rip it back apart, what are the odds I'm going to develop an oil leak from the tail end of the cam?? Thanks.... Steve

I think it's safe to say that you will have a leak, and a pretty good one.

Someone left the gasket out of mine and it would leave about a 5" puddle when parked......

"IT WILL" (LEAK) like a stuck hog. there is no easy fix. you are not the first one that has done that. and when you install the gasket add a little RTV on the back side of the gasket around where the cam is. I hear some guys are even cutting a groove in the flywheel housing and adding an o ring there.

It won't squirt out as the oil system is not pressurized, but there is a fair reservoir of oil in the valve chamber and that will run to the rear cam bearing as it's designed to but then much of it will just run out as there is no seal back there just the gasket....

If you have clean, burr free surfaces and use RTV properly it will NEVER leak. I have two engines with thousands of miles on them. No fly-housing to block gasket, no pan gaskets, no valve cover gasket, no water neck gaskets. Just RTV. As drip free and clean as modern engines.

A gasket will compress over time and eventually leak. If you use a gasket in an area where you cannot get to it to ever re-torque, like the fly-housing to block, expect eventual seepage. If it is a high point show car use all the proper gaskets and live with it. If not take a clue from modern technology. They don't call it 'form-a-gasket' for nothing!
