Nickname: shoebox

That's an easy one. The body style resembles a man's shoebox. Ford had a Tin Lizzie also. Another was a Fat Fender.
...Fords weren't the only cars to get a nickname, either. Nash made a Bathtub, Cord had a Coffin Nose, and the AMC Pacer was a Fishbowl.
Unfortunately, most cars of the 90's were Jelly Beans.

The '55 & '56 Chevy's are sometimes referred to as shoeboxes as well. I really think that moniker should be applied to the '61'-'67 Lincoln Continentals.

Maybe, but the true shoeboxes didn't come out untill much later.

Let's not forget the Edsel and its various nick names. LOL

So... Lawson, you've got CRS too?
Pray tell, what were those special Edsel nicknames?

Anyone else? There has to be a lot more nicknames that Lawson forgot!

The name just indicates a slab sided look with no discernable bulge out for the fenders. 48 fords have separate bulging out fenders, on the 49 the body is slab sided, no bulge out for front or rear fender. Same for the transition 54-55 for the Chevies, although the front fenders were incorporated into the body style, the rear fenders were still separately styled, in 55 both front and rear were incorporated into the body.

I guess a shoebox is an item that shares the rough proportions of a car and has obviously flat sides.

Am I overthinking it?

It's just a nickname after all!

Mart.
