Next stop Wesenberg

I have also ridden the "cog railway" when coal fired (part of the excitement), with smoke and small cinders coming thru the open windows. Usually very cold and windy, even in the hot/humid summer at the top of the mount. On the other side of the mountain is a road from the bottom to the top of the mountain, along wiith hiking trails. Many cars in new England and elsewhere carry a bumper sticker that states that "this care climbed Mt Washington".

Neat picture,I just think most of us are living in the wrong period in history! Most Fordbarners would love to be able to go back to those days (but be able to come back here for the dentist, doctor, and that type of thing:))

Hey Jeff,
HEY....you saying there was something 'wrong' with ...string/door knob tooth extraction dentistry back when :D

there is a big gear (cog) under the loco which is what the steam pistons turn. The tracks have a special 'track' down the middle which the cog engages for positive action up and down the mountain. Imagine a really long band of 'gear' teeth all rolled up which has been unrolled and spiked to the center of the tracks all the way up the mountain. Cool and crazy!

There is a brakeman who does nothing on the way up, but cranks hard as he can on the brakewheel on the way down.

Here is the Cog that does the work. A couple of years ago they introduced Biodiesel trains to the line.
