Hello, I am Spraygun. I have joined your forum to learn. Most of my adult life I have driven, repaired, etc. cars from the 60's and 70's. The knowledge I have gained has been sufficient to be able to buy and sell, repair, etc.
I am now faced with the task of appraising and selling a very large collection of Ford and Mercury parts, cars, manuals, memorabilia from the years of 38 to 58. I have admired Fords from this era but have never taken the time to learn about them.
After a week and a half of nights and weekends organizing and reading, I took a 16' moving van and 18' enclosed trailer of parts to Fall Carlisle. I believe I did OK, but it wasn't pretty.. I used my Iphone to look up prices of things I didn't have the time to price before I left and wasn't well versed on the exact id of all the items I brought. I am hoping to learn enough about this stuff to be able to to complete my task. The widow has been left with a huge number of items that she wishes to turn into money for her family and I wish to do this for her in the most efficient way possible.
Thanks in advance for imparting your knowledge.

you don't say where you are. There are several dealers of Ford parts who might be interested in purchasing the whole lot. If you want to continue to sell parts, look up prices of repro parts in a catalog and add to that, if they are used parts some items will sell very fast some you will never sell. But to get an idea look over the asking prices in the for sale section of this site and look into the parts wanted to get a feel for what people are looking for. One thing might be to located a V8 club member in your area and get him to consult with you on the parts/prices/etc

Ooops, I'm in northern Maryland, Carroll county. Any clue on why when I write a post or put in all the details in my profile, go to post I get the sign in page and my info is lost?

Did you check the " remember me " box when you signed in ?

Sorry if I was unclear, I am here to learn identification and value of late forties to late fifties Ford/Merc parts. I have several buildings of parts, One approx. 5000sq. of racked bodyparts, egines ( flatheads Y block and modern) transmissions ( some are marked with manufacture and date ) rears, steering items ( colums, large rack of leafsprings, brake backing plates, etc. ) Glass, a hundred or so driveshafts, etc.
Another with an office with shelves of Auto magazine collections, Manuals, etc. a shop with a 2 room library of manuals, flat rate books, parts interchange manuals, magazines, etc. 12 cars in stages of completion with parts, unrelated parts, etc.
3rd building has a 57 ford without front end, a collection of parts I have not gotten too, several hundred wax carboard 32X18X6 containing NOS parts.
Garage with a 80% done 22 Studebaker hot rod with 472 Caddy engine, 4speed, 9" rear.
15 bay pole barn packed with mostly unlabled parts.
A mechanical shop stocked for mechanical, body ( with lead)
A box truck body 1/2 full f hubcaps

Different areas of cars, parts, etc. outside.

I took a cross section of items to Carlise, the flathead aftermarket heads, intakes, magnetos went great. A hundred or so how to books sold in 1 day. 5 or 6 NOS panels sold. A small % of the trim and small parts sold. half of the lights, lenses sold. Thurs. and Fri. mornings were very busy, even with my canopy launching a couple 100 feet into a truck in the afternoon. Sat. was full of tire kickers and it rained so I left. I did better than any of my previous times there.

wish I was closer to you, you have stumled upton flathead nervana, what a collection, almost overwhelming. I can see a lot of just plain scrap metal but also a lot of good parts to have. Sheet metal, exterior stainless trim, hubcaps and aftermarket speed equipment will go first, then interior parts, wheels, engine blocks transmissions. the more common items springs-driveshafts-rear axles and other heavy stuff, 40's backing plates, spindles, etc. good luck

heres what proulbey happned to you at carlye sales great wed thur thats because the pro venders run around & buy the stuff from guys that don,t know the real value then they put in on there tables for the value price. if you don,t know the value the last place you want to bring them is to a large meet like hershey or carlye. i saw the same steering wheel on three different vendors table at hershey each time a higher price.do your home work or bring the stuff to little local swap meets so little guys like me have a chance of geting a bargen.lets see how much flack i get on this statment

Well, if you were @ Carlisle Wed-Thur, you were inundated with dealers "picking" your parts for their spaces to resell. It's just the name of the game. If you are getting what you want, let them handle the merchandise until they get their price. If you are not getting what you want, don't sell it to them. Friday is the first real day of selling to outsiders (not vendors) so that should have been an indication of how you are doing price-wise.

All of this will take time - you can't just jump in and do it all and do it well. "Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you" - that's what hustling parts is all about. If you are unsure, only bring smaller amounts of stuff you have a decent idea of price on and leave the rest home - you just need to take smaller steps until you become familiar with the numbers ....

Yes, I am aware that other dealers were buying alot of stuff. I have a huge amount of parts to sell, I talked with the owner and we decided that in the interest of time and labor required to liquidate the amount of parts we have, that I should price things to move. I believe that if I priced things at the going rate, it would take a few years, the idea is to wrap this up in 8-10 months. Some of the items I took to Carlisle didn't sell no matter how far I dropped the price. I moved 7K+ parts in 2 days by myself, the owner and I were both pleased. I also was able to make contacts with 30 or so people interested in items back at the buildings.
Now the challenge is to market the existing known items and ID the rest. There wil be a large amount of metal going to the scrapyard, rust, damage and just plain unwanted parts.
