Newbie here. I have had many vintage Fords over the years, but just got my 1st flathead v8. Just bought a really clean 1953 Customline Tudor with the last year of the flathead V8 and 1st year the automatic was offered, factory "Fordomatic". Runs and drives awesome. I have my 1st question though. It has the original 16" steel wheels on it, which I want to keep. But no hubcaps. I plan to put some baby moons on it. I have no idea which moons would work with this wheel. They are 16", and have the nubs on the outside of the hub ring on the wheel. I really want the smaller moons that snap into the inside of that hub ring though. I had heard you can get some clips that go on under the lug nuts that will work with the smaller moons? Is this true? If so, anyone know where I can get the clips? Also, another option is to just get larger moons that snap on over the nubs on the wheel. Does anyone know what size moons I need for that if I go that route? I see them all over the internet, but want to be sure I get the right ones that work with my factory wheels, and not a set that works on aftermarket wheels.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tony

You will have to measure the diameter or the circle that will fit the tip ends of the nubs. A 10 1/8" size was a common size but the wheels could have been changed. There are anywhere from 4 to 6 different diameters depending on wheel diameter and lug number & spacing diameter. The standard 1953 hub cap P/N was AB-1130-E.

Ford-O-Matics debuted in 1951 but were more common by 1953. The standard wheels were the 8A-1015-C which were 16" X 4.5". The optional 15" X 5" wheels P/N 8A-1015-D are pretty common too.

HI;I have a '53 also, excellent high speed cars. The Police suspension option is the wagon parts. International Pu's had the 4 1/2" bolt pattern and inside cap nubs. Otherwise, you have to buy aftermarket wheels to get the inside nubs. Newc

Thanks, knowing the wheel part number might help find some moons that will fit it. I couldn't find a part # on the wheels, but did measure them as 16". They are original to the car. Thanks again, that part # sure will help.

Just a note to say that a 15" wheel will measure a little over 16" total diameter, as
a wheel is measured at the bead where the tire meets the rim. A 16" wheel will
measure a little over 17" total diameter.
And as rotorwrench said, the most common hubcap size for '49 and newer wheels
is 10 1/8 " mount diameter.
