After the six bolts are removed the top, along with the shift lever should move straight up, regardless of which gear it is in. BUT if it is in neutral it should be easier and easire to line up and get it back together.

After 30 years of sitting there is probable some rust holding the shift forks to the sliding gear. Tap lightly on the lever with a hammer - trying to "rattle" or "shake" some ofthe rust off the forks. It will come straight up.

I would try rocking the car back and forth while trying to shift the lever to neutral at the same time. Can you move the shift lever front and back, or left and right?

If it's in reverse or second it should lift up. If it's in the other 2 gears it won't.
Try pulling the shift tower towards the back(rearwards).

shifter doesnt move neither way . when the bolts are out i can only lift it 1/4 inch. as i lift it wants to go toward the engine

if it only comes up 1/4 inch.
I'd think trying two peices of flat bar
slide one across the bottom of the front- and the other across the bottom of the back of the shift lever and lift.
Just a thought

The end of the shifting rod may be worn to the point where it has slipped out between the slots of the shifting forks. Remove the inspection plate on the bell housing (where you grease the throw-out bearing) and feel down around where the two shifting rods come through. One of them is likely forward holding the tower. Take a pry bar and try to push it back while wiggling the shifting rod.

I got it out by wiggling and pulling towards the rear. Looks like water is in there ice was holding things together. I hope I can flush and clean things up good enough. One fork looks odd. That could have been me trying to shift it?
