Is a hand crank compression test possible?
Yes, but it will give a lower reading than the starter spinning the engine. I'd drop the oil pan and side cover to clean out the sludge that almost every old engine has. Also with the pan off you can clean the oil pump screen and check the condition of the can gear.
You can also feel the rods for excess clearance, but using plastigauge would be best.
