Our thoughts go out to all our kiwi friends who have been affected by this disaster- the 2nd terrible earthquake in 6 months.

this one has done massive damage ,,loss of life fires burning in buildings they have had 5 more big after shocks bloody terrible! trev nz

Sorry to hear about the quake.

They are caused by global cooling. The center of the earth is cooling and getting smaller. Plate tectonics is what they call it. If the earth was warming, there would be no earth quakes.

65 dead and counting,2 suburbs described as unlivable.Blizzards in the states, floods and fires in oz,huge political un rest in the middle east, one has to wonder.

How lucky are we?
My wife and I moved to Christchurch in December with an idea in my semi-retirement we would spend our summers there and our winters in Australia. Except, my wifes surgeon called us two weeks after we arrived and told us to get back to Sydney right away.

We did as asked and my wife had a life saving operation (although we didn't know that at the time). After the surgery we leaned that a huge tumour she had on a kidney was ready to rupture and she would have bleed to death before anyone could figure out what was wrong.

We missed that earthquake, we got that tumour out just in time. This time the sun is shining on our faces and the wind is behind our backs.

Our family who is there are all OK, and our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones and friends. We feel helpless and stunned, so much of a very beautiful city has been lost, and doubt now enters my mind if it will ever be as beautiful again.

We give our heartfelt thanks to our friends around the world who are sending rescue teams, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, United Kingdom, European Union and the USA. The combined efforts of rescuers and ancilliary support staff, will determine over the next few precious hours and days how many lives can be saved, and how many loved ones returned to their families.

The present situation is grim with rain and winds from the south (cold) making things difficult for the rescue teams and life threatening for those who are trapped. The Prime Minister of New Zealand John Keys has descibed this tragedy as New Zealands 'darkest hour', however, resilience in the face of adversity and courage in the face of disaster, will see the quietly determined and stoic attitudes which are well known characteristics of the New Zealander (Kiwi's) triumph in these dark hours and be ready staunch and strong to meet the brighter days ahead.

The toll is 75 confirmed dead (expected to increase) and 300 missing.

KIA KAHA (Maori words = Stay Strong/Staunch)

Horrible news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of NZ so terribly burdened by these natural disasters. God bless.
