I think the Kiwi's are just as hearty and resourceful as those Californians that live, like the New Zealanders, on the 'Rim of Fire' that produces both significant (and a great many not-to-significant) Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
In talking to my N.Z. friends, I find that they too have accommodated themselves with the 'fact of life' that living in a great and beautiful country brings. Along with the Sun and the Moon, comes earthquakes.
This quake hit about 30 miles North, North East of the city of Christchurch on N.Z. South Island. Damage has been less than previous earthquakes and the latest news has no fatalities at this point, although Tsunami waves of 7 feet above normal tides break a 38 year record.
Like New Zealand's Christchurch, my own town of Eureka is a SeaPort that sits on an Earthquake fault. Like New Zealand, here we receive both the earthquake AND occasionally the more fearsome Tsunami - a wall of Ocean water that can be anywhere from 3 feet to 30 feet (or more) high - all bearing down on a hapless population and infrastructure with incredible force and devastating power.
So, while the mid-west deals with Tornadoes, and the Eastern and Southern coasts deal with hurricanes, and the Mississippi River valley deals with flooding - New Zealand and the Pacific Coast deals with earthquakes and Tsunamis. Like the Kiwis, I prefer the earthquakes and Tsunamis as my disaster of choice.
Three cheers for New Zealand !
