New water pump studs

Greetings to all. Need to know if i can use heat from a torch to get the old studs out so I can use the new ones that look like studs but are bolts...

Just keep the flame's heat away from the upper radiator hose and generator and you should be o.k. Double-nut the studs and lock the nuts together. Before turning the ratchet wrench to the left to back the studs out, make a slight turn to the right as if you were tightening the stud. Not much, just enough to break the grip between the studs' threads and the cylinder head threads. Then go ahead and back the studs out. The studs with nuts attached will make removing the water pump easier down the line in case that ever becomes necessary.

Just to be fair, there's no reason you can't also use conventional cap screws (what we also call "bolts") in that same application either in a pinch or if you don't care too much about maintaining original appearance. Not a bad idea to carry a couple in your spare parts box for when you have to change a pump at the side of the road and misplace one...

Heat does work to loosen studs and bolts. I think the heat expands the stud but it does not have anywhere to expand to, so that it is under compressive stress and deforms. When it cools it moves away from the wall to add a little bit of gap. After you heat use some spray penetrate. It helps to have a really hot concentrated flame or a induction coil heater. The induction coil only heats the stud and does a really good job at it. Red hot.
