Hi

I have a merc. Motor 49-53 and a friend gave me a stock merc. Alum.intake
Is there any advantage with the alum. Manifold other than being lighter?
Does it follow any better Thanks for any help.
Jim

I can think of one real advantage; the aluminum manifold is easier to bore out if you are running a small base 2GC carburetor.

my welcome too, just couldnt resist a little humor. now on topic, as far as stock manifolds, some folks like the earlier ones that have less of a square corner in the runners. and some folks go to the trouble of making sure the ports actually match the ports in the block. all of this may make you happy, but real results would be hard to notice. the other part of the manifold decision would be what distributor and what carburetor are you planning to run, there are different style vacuum ports threw the years that could be matched up better with the right parts.

It might be Canadian part or motor. Heads and manifolds were cast in aluminum over the river from Detroit in Windsor. They generally have a C in the part number prefix with "Made in Canada" cast in. Certainly nothing wrong with them that I'm aware of.

In case anyone is wondering, I was serious with my remark. Aluminum is much easier to work with than cats iron. I, for one, will buy every piece of reasonably priced aluminum (excuse me, aluminium) Canadian castings I can get my hands on.

As to weight savings, I've never seen any figures. Tomorrow, if I can get away with it, I'm gonna sneak the bathroom scale up to my shop and weigh a set of cast iron heads, an iron intake manifold, and corresponding timing cover and then do the same with the aluminum parts. Let's start a contest. I say the difference will be 85 lbs. What do you guys say? (If someone already knows, you can post it here and keep me out of domestic purgatory.) I'm talking 8BA stuff here.
