Welcome to the Fordbarn and to the adventure of Ford's "big" trucks. I'm happy to answer any questions you have about your truck.
My book will show you how your truck was originally constructed. From the photos it looks very stock. Engine replacements were the norm, but no so the transmission or brakes. Unlike a pickup, it's really hard to convert to hydraulic brakes so keeping the mechanical brakes is the way to go. Also, like someone else posted, the transmission in Ford trucks stayed basically the same for a long time. It's relatively easy to take apart, clean and replace anything overly worn.
You can purchase a copy of my book from the Early Ford V8 Club. I don't get any money from sales. In your case, it's probably worth the $60 price.
