new starter bendix

came upon a new problem using the reproduction rubber mount starter bendix, it catches in the flywheel and will not release until you stop the engine. 59AB engine with 49/53 merc crankshaft, new starter ring gear. it hits on the end of the starter gear where the gear connect to the bendix housing--any ideas? before new ring gear it was doing the same thing-we thought it was because the gear was bad, put a old version on and it works fine.

What flywheel did you use ? 8ba or 59a, if you used the 49-53 flywheel there is a difference , you must use the 59a flywheel in the 59a engine.

it is a 8ba, flywheel, has been working for almost 25 years with no problem, rebuilt the starter and electric rebuilder suggested to install new style bendix--as I said went back to old style and works fine

I never got that lucky glad it works for you! I tried it both ways and had issues, so I just stay with the flywheel that is for the same engine, It seems (to the best of memory) there was about an eighth inch or less difference in the distance on the flywheel to crank mounting face, I had the engine balanced with the less worn flywheel in my parts pile, very frustrating to say the least. is there such thing as early or late Bendix?
