BUT remember to clean the sock of debris frequently, otherwise it's self defeating!

Not only is it a good idea to change it very frequently at first, but as the sock stays cleaner and cleaner and you have to change it less often, you might get to a point where you abandon it altogether.
It is most critical at first,,, at least that was the case when I had mine flushed.
