New outer wheel bearing problem, '40 hubs...

I have '40-up hubs, with 5 on 5.5 pattern, on the front of my '39 Tudor.

Bought new bearings from MAC's, outers are Timken pn#09047.

After I slide the drum onto the spindle, the outer bearings don't want to slide all the way on, to seat within the hub/drum. They act like the race is too small for the spindle.

What am I missing here? Do I need to run the bearing down into the drum by tightening the spindle nut? Seems like I wouldn't get the drum back off, if that were the case...

Help?

I'm not sure I have a good understanding of your problem, but..... From your description, it sounds like the outer bearing's outer race wasn't seated in the drum before installation of the drum commenced. Either that or the inner bearing's outer race wasn't seated causing the drum to be held away from the backing plate. With both bearing races properly seated and the proper grease seal in place, the drum should slip on the spindle leaving the spindle threads visible. A picture would be helpful, if available. Good luck.

When i put F100 brakes on 47 truck spindles i had to use different inner races and bearings and the the smaller dust covers. The outer races were all the same for both the 47 truck spindle and the f100 spindles. Check all I.D.s and thickness and the angle of the races. Sounds like the wrong races or the wrong inner bearings. Good Luck! Ken PM me and i'll get you the part #s.

take the drum off and see if the bearing fits into the race on the drum. then slide the bearing over the spindle and make sure it will go far enough on to seat when the drum is installed. If both of these work your probably not aligning the hub and drum so the bearing will fit. The bearing should fit by hand, DO NOT FORCE. the bearing is 09074 and the race 09196. are both sides doing the same? if not you could have a small burr on the spindle holding the bearing out.

Thanks for the tips. I think I will take some emery cloth to the spindles.

The old drums and bearings were pretty shot from sitting for 30 years.

Looks like some galling happened. Possibly from it rolling on old, junky bearings.
