New Model A Engine

What is the status of the new engine Terry Burtz was working on?

Hey Bill,
Good question ! Haven't heard from Terry about any progress or lack thereof lately. Sure am rooting for him (for us,eh:)) to get this new block off of the ground. Getting antsy and started another B project, hoping that might bring some news...if you know what I mean.

I forget what crank he was going to use but the Burlington's are not going to be available anymore. FWIW
Paul in CT

I wonder if Ford motor company would be willing to back Terry. May be that way Terry would have the ford engineers working with him and the money from Ford and we would all benefit even Terry with having his new motors available. Anyone have any contacts with ford?

Terry is doing new crank rods and block so nothing to do with Burlington, but I know someone is looking into taking over the Burlington Crank business. Terry is in the process of changing foundries. Lodi doesn't seem to be able to handle this complicated of a process. He has got two usable blocks but has not machined them.

Look at his website Modelaengine.com.

Regarding Ford's involvement........

Ford has absolutly no desire to help anyone in the antique car field. They actually tax (a user fee) on any parts you buy with the Ford name on them.

So they actually hinder antique car development......They really have little or no interest in helping out anyone in our hobby. Just so you know.

At the MARC meet here in 2011 the price for a machined block, crankshaft and 4 rods was to be $4000, not a complete motor, the remanding parts from your engine can be used, this price will obviously have escalated, I wish him much success with his project

Good choice Terry.

My perception is that the big three car companies pretty much view it as a one way street and you know what direction that is.

Here you are incorrect. I thought the same thing and went to Ford and asked them. I was given a lengthy interview with the manager of the department. Ford got sued by a person's family because a supposed Ford part failed on a Mustang and the driver died. Through extensive research it was determined that someone was making the parts off shore and putting the Ford name and part number on the part and selling it as genuine. So Ford had to crack down on parts manufactures.

Now the second part about not being interested. If you want to make a part, they will help you find a facility that will do it and work with you to make it correctly. They don't charge anything until you start selling parts, but you do have to contract with them to make them they way they agree to and in a facility that meets Ford criteria. They actually are quite easy to deal with.

Hey John,
THANKS for that info, as it is encouraging , eh ! Please let us know, if you find out any additional info as to name and contact info of possible 'someone' who takes over Burlington. As I'm in the market for a new B crank, I'd be right in line waiting for your info:)
Also, Terry seemed to have no interest in investor(s) for his project, so I can see where he might not want Ford involved. Can not see as I fault him for that, but maybe Ford can direct Terry to a foundry that does not disappoint as LODI did !

If this were true how then can all the crap, ill fitting, no where near the original dimension/finish parts that are being packaged in those nice blue and white labels that have the ford name on them get sold?

New production cars, cars that are under ford warranty yes! Model A's and T's no I don't believe it at all.

The supplier contracted with Ford to use the part number. That is how they get to use the name on the bag. If the part has Ford on it or the part number on it they have to go through the process of getting Ford's approval or run the risk of being sued.
