New Model A Coolant?

Does anyone know, did Ford just use water in the radiator at the end of the Model A assembly line, or was some alcohol added? Thanks

sometimes after working on the car I need to add a bit of alcohol.
(to me not the radiator) :p
Chris, hic,
I do with a lil' Sweet Moscato, anything testier, I would have the Dog bring me a blanket, so's I could sleep in the hall where I expired on the new carpet.:p Bill W.

I would think it would be according to the season. As alcohol would evaporate I would think it to be a waste of money to add it to summer time cars.

A home machanic showed me an old can of radiator oil and said that this was used in the "A" days as it also was perfect for the tye of water pump that the "A"s used.

After a bit of dicussion we came to the conclution that milliling/cutting oil would be prity much the same.

What does cutting oil do? lubricates, cools, protects steel, prevents rust, some frost protection, does'nt break down in the heat, certantly no major health hazard, does'nt look for leaks, does'nt damage paint, etc.
An all round nice product, above all to an enginer it smells great.

There must be some negitives but I cant think of one that wiil cause any damage

Tom, I don't know the facts of what Ford actually did, but reasoning has me thinking the water was drained after running at the factory, and cars shipped dry? Different seasons and temps throughout the land where the cars were going--possibly the dealer would contend with the coolant to be used at final destination. This is a very good question!

Just a guess, maybe Ford drained them for shipping to the dealers. Then the dealers prepped them for the customer.

That's a very good question.Just what DID they do? I can't picture them just sending a car out into the yard after assembly without coolant,or sending one out to sit until it was shipped in the cold with straight water. When my grandfather sold them new they had to pick them up at the railyard in Manchester, about 20 miles away. They were just a gas station that bought three cars at a time. They would recruit three boys, send them up on the train,(15 cents each)and the boys would drive the cars back.Just jump in and go.They had to quit that practice, the boys ruined a couple of engines racing back to town. They tore the babbit out.
