Hello Guys,

I am a new member to the Ford Barn. I have been enjoying it for a while now. I am a member of the HAMB and have been for several years. I don't post much, mostly read. I have recently bought a 1955 Ford Fairlane Town sedan and I am in the process of fixin it up for my wife. I have serched the site for a post on the exterior door handles and did not find anything on my question.

What is the difference between the rear door handles and the front? I puchased new door handles from Dennis Carpenter for the front, but his add says front only will not fit back door. They look physically the same from the outside. Mac's and Carpenter do not show the rear handles. Hers are pitted pretty bad and would like to replace both the front and back.

Thanks for any answers you might have. :D

Thanks for the response, I just went and looked at mac's and his catalog discription does say for front and rear doors. Dennis Carpenters catalog says fits all except rear doors on 4 door. For now I only ordered one set and have not installed them yet. I just wondered if anyone could explain the difference, if there is any, I can't imagine Ford not keeping them the same to save money having two different handles made.

I have not mastered picture posting yet. I will try soon to post a picture. I have really enjoyed working on the fairlane and found it to be breath of fresh air from my other cars, and a challenge as I am new to the Y block.

welcome do yourself a favor while you have the doors apart lube everything I spray the latch assy. with pb blaster as it is a penetrating oil and softens the old grease

Thanks Guy's for all the welcomes,

We have had the 55 since november of last year. I have completely rebuilt the front suspension and added areostar springs, new shocks, power booster, disc brakes on front and duel master. Using the advise of you guy's I have converted to 12 negative ground. I am adding a PCV valve real soon. I have removed the draft tube and blocked it off. I ordered a 1" risor for the carb with an inlet for the PCV hose to hook too.

The interior needed help so the wife and I made new door panels and recovered them. Made new wind lace, re-carpeted it and bought seat covers. I also painted the dash and all the metal trim around the windows. Had to replace the passengers window as it was cracked, but the rest were good.

Also had to put floor pans in all four foot areas. Trunk is solid as a rock and so is the front cross member. Has a little rust in the rockers I will be addressing when I get to the body work.

The motor seemed to run pretty good, although we only drove it a few miles before we started working on the car. I pulled the valve covers and both sides looked like they have been getting oil. Thats about it for now. I will try to learn how to post pictures and will post one soon. I have a couple of other old cars but they are off topic for this forum. Besides the 55 is my favorite.

Cheers to all you 55 ford Y block guys. ;)

Welcome sedanman36, I'm glad you asked about the door handles, I've been looking at the handles on my 56 lately and wondering what the difference in them was. Thanks to the guys who answered the question.

Hi Guy's,

Update: I installed the front new door handles yesterday and removed the rear, they are exactly the same. I have ordered another set for the rear.

56 fairlane, we are painting ours just like yours, red and white. It needs new paint and we like that combo. Thanks to all for the welcomes and advise.

It is a 272 y block. I think it is the original engine, all though there is a bracket for power steering attached to the water pump and it does not have power steering. I think it has had some parts changed from other engines over the years.
