Got a new tool for the garage.
Will primarily be used for my 50’s and 60’s cars but I was curious to know if anyone has run a model A distributor on one of these machines ?

I have. I have that very machine that I purchased several years ago at Model-A Days at Gilmore. I also have a smaller Allen desktop version that I like. The biggest things we check is to verify when the advance is made that it does not change dwell (this is common with worn housings). Also, we are looking at total advance between the the Distributor Body, and that the cam lobes are allowing for the same dwell at all 4 positions. Has your Strobe light been converted to LED? Huge difference.

Using the distributor machine to determine the best average position for equal firing position by altering the cam location on the shaft then adjusting the position of the drive gear to match when using reproduction parts that aren’t quite on a perfect center.
With one A distributor it had a point bounce condition at 1500 rpm that lubricating the cam cured.
With NOS original points the distributor machine showed point bounced at 6000 engine rpm.
Reproduction modern point plates showed a lot of dwell change over good original ones doing the tests Brent was mentioning.
I have a Marquette and a Allen machine.

I have that Sun machine, but as a benchtop. It is buried in a storage trailer,I only fired it up to see it work many years ago.A fellow that used them in the 60's put an old distributer in it and showed me how it worked. My friends that own a junkyard where I worked do a lot of old garage cleanouts, they call me to come get things like that.I got probably a dozen or more scopes over the years,I sold them all to guys with muscle cars for garage ornaments.I do have an old Allen scope left, that one never seemed to generate much interest.I sold a Marquette scope a couple of years ago,but that one was much more modern.

Yes it has been converted to LED and other internals have been upgraded as well with parts from Mark at Paramount.

I also have a Marquette machine that I am trying to get Collin (alexiski) to buy !
It worked up till a month ago then started acting up . I am told it probably needs a resistor , capacitor or something like that .
Electronics are out of my comfort zone !

How do you run a model A or B distributor on the Sun machine ? I would imagine it would require using the oil pump drive in order to make the unit tall enough ?

One thing I noticed with mine is that you need a good condenser connected to the distributor in order t get a good strong strobe flash. Just FYI. I need a good working Tach/Dwell module if anyone might have one in their junk pile.

The distributor clamp on the sun distributor machines is adjustable it will go very low low enough to hold the model A. distributor.

Good to know that I can use mine for Model A dist's. I bought one from a fellow club member (mine is a 52 Model) and the engine analyzer is about the same vintage.

On my distributor machine, I use an intermediate distributor shaft in the chuck of the distributor machine to move the distributor up and away from the machine a little. It makes it easier to have it a little higher up to work on it.

My experience.

That’s kind of what I figured. I’ll have to chuck one up in the machine and see how it looks

Thanks Al.
That's my 57 Country Sedan . 245HP "Thunderbird Special" engine and a three speed manual with overdrive. Very nice driving car.
