New guy needs a mentor

Picked up my first model A about three weeks ago and I've been having fun driving it ever since. I'm looking for a guru near me that could possibly show me the ins and outs of this motor. I'm not used to driving an auto of this vintage and I'd like to know if the various noises and vibrations are normal. There's a slight miss during idle and the valve train seems a little noisy. But this is of course relative to me have zero experience. It's a 1930 deluxe coupe and I'm in the fenton, Michigan area! Thanks in advance for any help guys!

Visit www.mafca.com go to chapters in your area and see who's out there. They will be more than glad to help. Also you should Join Model A Ford Club of America (mafca). Welcome to this Great Hobby!

Thanks for the info, unfortunately the only mafca chapter in Michigan is about 6 hours away driving a modern car.

Congratulations and welcome to the hobby. Consider Fordbarn, until you locate a physical person, as your mentor.

Here is a great Web site - http://MODELABASICS.com/

I suggest the following books be purchased for mechanical repair and adjustments,

Les Andrews "red" book
Ford Service Bulletins (large pages if you can find them not the small book.)

For "if i need to change out a part what is the part Ford used on my car?"
Restoration and judging standards.

And there are others that should be purchased as time goes on.

All these can be bought from any vendor.

I also suggest you get the catalogs of the major vendors that have break out drawings of the major subsystems; Brattons, Mikes, and Snyders, come right to mind.

Above all have fun!!

Welcome Revoir. Don't be shy about asking questions. I can tell you from experience there aren't any dumb questions about Model A's.... You'll have a great summer driving that A.

Welcome. I always put where I'm from in my public profile. That way you can hook up or if people are in the neighborhood they might drop by.
I'm helping a local fellow get connected up and did a few things to his car. He wanted to pay me......I reminded him I don't want to get paid what I'm worth.
I don't work that cheap.
