New Gas Effects On Old Fuel Pumps

I have a nos fuel pump that has never been used with this new formulated gas.
What will happen if I use it and how long would it last?
Would using Stable gas preservative help? What else can be used to help prevent the diagram from deteararating from the 10% ethanol?:confused:
 
With all due respect, the destruction of a pump diaphragm is the least of your woes to expect from the use of ethanol. Rust starts in your fuel tank, spreads to your fuel sender, your pickup tube, then to your fuel line. Oxidation swells and destroys your flex line, then your diaphragm, your pump valves, then moves on to your carburetor and attacks your inlet valve and your float. Your accelerator pump malfunctions with a sticky valve and the piston dries up while the diaphragm in your power valve softens and blows out. Your carb gaskets begin to leak, and your carb boils over when you shut down, producing a hard start after only 15 minutes with under hood temperatures. I would say a replacement of the pumps diaphragm with a fuel resistant nitrile diaphragm would be a good first step of a long list of preventive measures. Happy days to you with the new gasoline.

Gasahol is a pain for sure. Very quietly more and more stations are sell-
ing the good old Kettering leaded fuel. For diaphragm material I prefer military grade
VITON, it is not cheap but it will pump anything.

Depending on how old the pump is, and what the diaphram is made from there is a good chance it wouldn't work for long ---or at all no matter what gas is used, I have taken apart "new" pumps that the diaphram cracked with any movement ----the diaphrams made of several thin layers of coated cloth have been the most likely to crumble---perhaps the ethonal would soften these and they could work longer than with regular gas--but not long enough to be useful

Does the pump work now?, will it pull a vacuum through the suction port, will it make pressure -hold your finger over the port and work the lever and see if it trys to function, a "nos" pump can be a good rebuild with only a new diaphram ---is it "oem', or aftermarket, back when the cars were "new" there were cheap pumps sold, and good pumps, ---look at the mounting holes to see if there are bolt/lockwasher marks, new pumps don't have these marks, many rebuilt parts are being passed off as new because they are in a box

Leavin the untreated ethonal gas in my lawnmower all winter fixed it last year, when I got it out of the trash it would only run with some choke on, I ran it that way for a few years always running it out of fuel before storage---but I forgot last year, in the spring it started up easy, and to my surprise it didn't need choke to run after warmup----the previous trash lawnmower needed a sock stuck into the tank every spring to suck the water out ---here in NJ whatever toxic waste they are using for additives seems to be working, not that many problems, and there is no choice but to use it, the 1 place on the "real" gas list sells racing gas out of a 55 gal drum for dirt bike riders

I put a old used flathead Ford power valve into the holley carb in my chevy truck, it has been working for the last 5 years---the gas doesn't seem to eat every kind of old rubber

Really? Leaded fuel? Non-Ethanol? Sure. Leaded? Not so much.
 
Is non-ethanol fuel not available in your area?

Within the last five plus years I have lost the electric and mechanical fuel pumps on everyone of my old cars, I have also had lots of carb problems, with vehicles and utility equipment.
The use of Stable in my fuels has minimized the carb problem on engines that are not run on a regular basis. I have also changed out all of the old rubber hoses to unleaded hose.
My tuneup man has told me to add 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil per 10 gal of fuel to all of the carb equipped engines. It is his belief that this will minimize the effects of unleaded fuel on the fuel pumps and carbs... We'll have to wait and see if he is right..
Of course we all know that MMO is great in engines, on your morning cereal, and to shave with.

The best thing you can do is get a fuel pump rebuilt with parts that are known to be alcohol resistant. Fuel pump, carburetor and all gas delivery hoses on my car are alcohol resistant. Have had no problems in several years using 10% ethanol gas except for some vapor lock issues when traveling at high altitude on hot days. I tried a couple tanks of non ethanol gas, found in some of the western states we traveled through, to see if it would help stop these vapor lock issues, and found that it did not help when used in my car.
