I have used AVG free for years with good results

It is on 4 laptops - wife, daughter, and 2 granddaughters - and my desktop.
I keep them updated and so far we have had no problems
The only thing that is annoying is a warning that we could be better protected every few weeks that we ignore

Always logged on, never an add

I had the same problem last month. I went through the windows control panel to the add/remove programs. I looked down the list and found two different "ad" type programs running. After I removed them, all the pop up and left colum ads went away and have not been back since.
