New cork sinks

Could this cork deteration from new gas be the reason for all of my gas gauges seeping and turning black and brown around the edges. This just started in the last 2 years, and some of my gauges haven't been out or leaked in 40 years.

I had the same problem. I thought the cork came off. Purchased the nylon float and well we will see. Had to go through the front just like the first time...no other way that I can see.
