new barn find

I dragged this in from the country today. It looks like it has been in the barn for many years. Complete, free, nice radiator, coils and box. 1920 restamp number. I'll bet it will run. I know where there is a chassis that has been made into a farm wagon. Hmmmm. . . . . Another project.

That is sort of what I just found on craigslist. I have a 1927 model t setup with a pulley mounted to ******. Im hoping it will start as well. Good luck with yours, it certainly is more complete than mine.

Im jealous that you guys find this stuff! I look behind every barn and shed up here and rarely see much, but I keep looking!!! Does that frame have a FIFTH bearing behind those pulleys? Thats a lot of weight AND torque on the back end of a marginally strong crankshaft. Thats a 26-27 motor too! ws

Hell Bill,

You know good & well you are just looking for a still or some shine ... ;)

(Nice score on that engine .....:D)

Yeah man... "Ive been a rustaholic for 50 years. I know Ill never be rust free..." Not a freind of Bill W but I am BILL W. !!

I did check the 27 T engine and there is a bearing mounted on the far end of pulley to carry the weight of pulley. i have no plans for engine yet but who knows what my next project will be.

Good point about the crankshaft.

Mine has an extra grease cup added, and it looks like the pulley is mounted on a wheel hub complete with hubcap. So I'm assuming there is a 5th bearing. I'll try to post a detailed picture.

I have posted 2 pictures of what looks like a factory made belt drive stationary Model T engine. This is in a museum at Allentown PA as I recall.

Just wondering if theres a bigger #4 bearing inside that back pulley; like an additional #5 maybe. Those big ol' flat belts usually run with a foot of slack in them but theres still a good lateral load on that crank. ws

I probably won't run it loaded. In fact if I can get the chassis bought, it will end up as a "skeeter" However, I am a hit and miss engine man so either way it will look good in the shop.

At 1800 rpm it would make a great 20 Kw generator for after the zombie apocalypse. The old T should run on MAG too after the EMP attacks.
Id say that it would run a slower 3 phase generator but may not have the stamina at 900 rpm. ws

Yachtsmanbill, I hate to give away secrets, but I find most of my Model T cars and parts by driving a model T. For example, go to the grocery store or auto parts house with that model T. It opens up the conversation to old cars. That speedster in your profile might do it, but a T car would work better.
Currently there are two barn fresh cars I heard about in a local watering hole. By talking to fellow customers. I drive a T there when the weather is good. One is a 1930 Chevy 4 dr Landau which I have not found a price on yet and the other is a 26/27 T coupe which I will see shortly and maybe buy if the price is right. I almost forgot, I heard about two sedans while at a local church picnic with my T parked very near the picnic area. Church lets me park near as the old cars provide entertainment for the folks at the picnic.

Your running gear was made in Albert City, Iowa. Made by the Thieman tractor Co. They had both Model T, and Model A engines, in there tractors. I think my boy has one, or two out here yet.

I gotta agree Willie, but it seems to have kinda dried up around here. I spent many, many moons Model T'ing all around here as a kid and there was piles of stuff all along the farms' tree lines and behind the barns... heck, we had 80 acres in the woods and there was a 1925 Essex 4 door abandoned there. In 1970 that made for an easy practice target. Ive met almost all the T guys around here and when I hear about something at a barn sale or whatever (I REALLY do look a lot!!!) these guys are on it with me.
Altho I quit T-T racing years ago (tavern to tavern!) I still stop to chat with the clientel; usually bikers and always ask them too! Up here Ive had people stop at the house when they see the Pollinator behind the house in the shop when the door's open. Yellow is pretty easy to spot!
Definitely gonna make the July 4th parade this year... hope I get the wolf whistle installed by then! ws

2 thoughts--

first, my unit (first post) has the belt pulley after the bell. So it has the benefit of the u joint taking the pressure off the crankshaft.

second--Kohnke--when you refer to the outfit built by Thieman, is it the unit in the first post or the carted model in post 10? I would have guessed mine to be homemade.

I'm familiar with Thieman, being an old Iowa boy--seeing the conversion tractors at Midwest Old Threshers for many years.

There is even a pickup here in Kentucky with a Thieman lift gate.

I have been trying to get this old 27 T engine running. found two stuck valves and decided that I would do a valve job. My grandfather has the equiptment to do the work. One of the valves had rusted in so had to go a bit deep on that one.
